About

Brainy, with a heart
— Jazz Weekly

Andrew Van Tassel is a jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator. Described as “saxophonist of considerable talent and a notable composer [with] a classic Blue Note feel” (Jazz & Blues Report), his music combines traditional jazz approaches with modern influences, showing “depth and imagination” (The Patriot Ledger).

His performance history includes appearances at prestigious venues (e.g., Carnegie Hall, Rockwood Music Hall), as well as collaborations with diverse ensembles (e.g., the GRAMMY-nominated Terraza Big Band, orchestras, hip hop and rock bands, and improvisational electronic experimentations). Andrew’s playing has earned recognition as the winner of the 7 Virtual Jazz Club Competition (2025) and Unsigned Only International Music Competition (2024). As a composer, his work has earned him recognition from the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award (2021) and as a semifinalist in the International Songwriting Competition (2021, 2023, 2024).

After studying at the Manhattan School of Music and New England Conservatory, Andrew now gives back to the next generation of jazz musicians as a guest artist and clinician at distinguished schools across the country. He was most recently on faculty as a lecturer in jazz saxophone at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Andrew has also donated his time as Associate Artistic Director of Musical Mentors Collaborative, Inc.

His compositions show depth and imagination...both invigorating yet unerringly melodic.
